How to teach Indoor Cycling: Fartlek Riding

Description:
"Fart•lek": It's a funny word and a great training tool. Fartlek is Swedish for "speed-play". The training technique has been around for decades and is a very effective way of increasing a cyclist's speed and endurance. Basically, Fartlek training involves varying your pace throughout your ride. In other words, you integrate intense sprints and bursts of speed into the workout, followed by a seated or standing recovery below what most would consider easy riding. In this class, you will learn how to put together a Fartlek ride including how to pace the class, work with the music, and keep participants engaged and motivated. Bring a water bottle and a towel; be prepared to sweat.

When most people think of mind/body training, they think meditation and quiet environments – a far cry from what most indoor cycling classes are like. But indoor cycling can be a form of moving meditation. In this session, you’ll learn how to create a fluid class that asks participants to lose themselves in your words and in the music – causing extraneous thoughts to disappear to focus on the ride. You’ll learn how to create a ride that will be hard and efficient, and that will leave your participants feeling both euphoric and at peace. Bring a water bottle and a towel; be prepared to sweat.
